I think this article is very cool! I like how Jeanne Baret grew up not being away from home or her family but had the courage to go on this adventure! I also think its cool how she didnt grow up like every other kid in school but she was forced to be one with nature. This helped her become an expert in the medical properties of plants. Her accomplishment of circumnavigating the world really gives me the inspiration to do something challanging and not give up on it! Jeanne really has given me that confidence. I think it would be awesome if a movie was made based on Jeannes story many people would be amazed!
I love how this article shows the bravery and strength that women are capable of. Although her adult life began sketchy, she really proved to be a great row model for everyone. It was incredibly brave to hide her identity and more brave that she kept her goals even when she was discovered. I though that leaving her children was heartless but at the same time showed a great amount of dedication.
Although Baret and Commerson seemed to have a scandalous relationship, they did seem like true lovers out for adventure. They followed there dreams, abandoned their children, risked persecution and pursued their dreams as botanist. They had their faults in life but did lead an adventurous one. I found it interesting that Baret ended up in her original home in France because it seems like most adventures go back to the beginning. I just find that really interesting, its almost as if all adventures must go back to the beginning in the end. We are always called to do things but eventually retire in order to reflect on ones life. Undertaking such a long adventure must give you a lot of time to think about life. I believe this article has inspired me to never get comfortable with the bare minimum and always pursue life with the intent of excellence. It may be for pursuing your career or for finding one's self.
I also find this woman to be very brave for what she undertook. She worked as a man and maintained her commitment to her lover. she escaped persecution and faced many dangers with men and the weather. This woman proved to be loyal and hard working. I admire her strength for what she went through.
I liked this article because as a child she went about thinking she would never go so far out in the world and thought her life would be the same with no excitement what so ever, but she ended up being this brave, courageous woman who so many people look up to today. She went through a lot while she was on the journey from having to abandon her children, doing work equivalent to the men and then living in fear of what the crew members would do to her but still ended up being strong and didn't let it effect her dreams and went on. I think it was a very risky thing to do but she did it, and I don't think she regretted it which was a good thing.
I think that this article is interesting and I learned something new today. Jeanne Baret grew up as a poor person tending the fields. Her love for plants helped her get connected with voyages. Being the first woman voyager, many judged her. Her accomplishment of traveling the world has inspired me to never give up in what I am doing. If you love what you do, stick with it. Dont let anyone tell you different. Always overcome the odds, and if you dont succeed try and try again. She grew up in France, and set sails as a young woman. This has inspired me and others should read this article.
I really enjoyed reading this article. I was surprised that Baret took little interest in her three children. I was also impressed that she collected 500 or more species of plants. I was disgusted that the doctor onboard the ship justified Baret's rape as some kind of gender liberation. I was also curious about the value of 600 and 200 livres in terms of income in 18th century France, and if Baret was considered wealthy upon inheriting her first lover's money and then receiving an annual sum for her botany contributions. I wish I could see a picture of Baret.
I really liked reading this article for a couple of reasons. There were a couple of interesting parts to it in my opinion, like for example how Jeanne Baret spent her childhood thinking that she would spend her whole life as a poor person and never travel more than 20 miles away from her home, but she ended up being the first women to circumnavigate the Globe. Jeanne inspired me because no one thought that a woman could make this journey, but she managed to sneak on disguised as a man, survive many struggles, and do all of this and more while she was pregnant. This article seems to prove that life on the ship was not very easy, one part in particular of the article that I think proves this is when the article says "The temperature was consistently in the 80s, and the sweat-soaked linen wrap chaffed at her skin giving her eczema. They were both living for the day when they could get off the ship". I found it remarkable that Jeanne could keep up with all the men on the ship, and manage to do extra at times because of Commerson’s injury. To me it was also shocking that Jeanne would decide to abandon all of her children right after their birth. This is shocking mainly because of the tough times she was going through while pregnant, and by giving up her children it seems to me like all of her hard work was just a wasted effort. Those are some of the reasons why I liked this article.
This story was very interesting and surprising. The hardships Jeanne Baret faced was really unbelievable and just seemed to get more unreal with each paragraph I read. On one hand, I admire her determination to do what she loved, which was to research plants and travel the world. She taught herself all about plants and became an "herb woman". However, I was shocked to read that she gave up her children. Commerson had also given up his child. I have to wonder if they had any regrets in doing so, especially after Jeanne learned that her son had died. To sneak aboard a ship disguised as a man in this particular time period seems quite unusual and also shows her desire to be with Commerson and do what she loves to do. The conditions aboard the ship were terrible. To learn that they had to eat rats due to lack of food and not being able to catch fish is disgusting but necessary if you do not want to starve. Unfortunately, Jeanne was raped by other crew members once they learned she was a female. She later discovered she was pregnant. She eventually returned to France where she lived out the rest of her life. Although she was never recognized for circumnavigating the globe, she did receive recognition for her work as a naturalist.
If I was to be remembered for anything in my life i would like to be remembered for a scientific advancement in life. To be known for generations on correcting an issue in the world, or discovering something new would be great feat in someones life. The most shocking thing about this article was the mentality that she had about giving up her kids. There is no way to know if she had a trauma in life, but I think that she may have had an issue in her life that caused her to have this mind set about having children.
